ABOUT
US
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Joining the League of Women Voters of Indiana County also confers membership in the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and the League of Women Voters of the United States. Currently there are 51 county residents who are members of LWVIC. Dues are $50 a year, payable to LWVIC. Student memberships are $25. Checks can be mailed to treasurer Sandy Whitson, 403 Elm St., Indiana, PA 15701. Email lwvic@yourinter.net for more information about joining the League. *Although membership was opened to men in the 1970’s, we keep our original name to honor those women who struggled for 70 years to bring the vote to women. The League was formed in 1920 to help newly enfranchised women become educated about the political process. LWVIC Board of Directors
The Board meets monthly. Meetings are open to any member. There are two general membership meetings a year—a pot luck dinner in January and our Annual Meeting in May. We have several active committees who meet regularly and often schedule information meetings for our members. We have joined with Phi Delta Kappa, AAUW, the NAACP and the Indiana Reading Council to sponsor fall and spring meetings every year relating to current issues in public education. We produce an online Indiana County Voters Guide for November elections and hold a Candidates Night prior to Election Day co-sponsored and broadcast by local radio stations. |
