Overview>School District Directors
School District DirectorsEach school district has a nine-member board of directors, elected for four year terms, with four positions in each district expiring at the end of 2005 and five positions expiring at the end of 2007. Candidates may cross-file and run in more than one party. Some districts elect directors at-large while some elect by region of the district. Boards of school directors are the controlling and governing agencies for local school districts. They have full power to carry out the responsibilities assigned to the school district by law (as found in the Public School Code). They may hire all personnel, provide for school buildings, buy textbooks and other supplies, levy taxes and issue bonds for school purposes. Most boards meet monthly in open session and provide one or more other work sessions and/or committee meetings each month, according to their needs and schedule, in addition to individual preparation of agenda materials for each meeting.. There is no monetary compensation. The seven school districts wholly in Indiana County are listed below. Follow the links for additional information, including usual meeting times and places.
