2/8/2006 - HB 1318--Passed by House and Now in Senate Rules & Executive Nominations Committee
From: Elizabeth Milner, LWVPA President, info@palwv.org

HB 1318 (the Voter ID Bill) passed by the House last week is currently in the Senate Rules & Executive Nominations Committee. Check the PA Legislative Service Information to see the list of bills committed to that committee and to determine whether your Senator is a member of that committee.

If they are a member, please contact them and let them know you oppose the bill and ask them not to report it out of committee. If it goes to the Senate for a vote, ask them to oppose it. The Governor has been quoted as saying that if passed by the Senate he will veto it, but we cannot depend on that. There is a great deal of momentum to have this measure passed before the next election. However, it could disenfranchise approximately 200,000-400,000 Pennsylvania voters. The bill is so bad that the prime sponsor has withdrawn his support. (Click here for the League Position Statement on HB 1318.)
