The League of Women Voters supports legislative action being introduced
in both Houses of the General Assembly to amend Act 72 in order to meaningfully
extend the deadline for school districts to decide whether it is in the
best interest of their constituents to opt in to the provisions of the
law. The present deadline is a fast approaching May 30, 2005. These legislative
proposals are especially appropriate since the lawsuit challenging the
constitutionality of Act 71, the law which created slot machine gambling
in Pennsylvania, may not be decided till mid -June. Furthermore, the administration
has stated that even if slot machine gambling is established, funds for
property tax relief will not be available to the school districts until
the 2007-2008 school year. These proposals, if successful, will allow
more time for communication between school boards and their constituents.
