Centerfold Lesson:
Before and Beyond

CLEANING UP A PARK

Good citizenship means more than picking up and recycling trash in parks and playgrounds. Good citizens also learn how they can—through governmental and private organizations—affect how parks are run.

1. Find out who "owns" your park.

2. Do they have regular meetings to talk about the park?

3. Who is responsible for the park's maintenance? What do they do, and when?

4. How much does it cost to maintain this park, and where does the money come from?

5. How popular is this park? (Hint: To find out, you could survey residents and you could count how many visitors are there at certain hours over a certain period of weeks.)

6. What do members of your community like best about this park and what problems do they see with it?

7. If there were things about the park that you wanted to change, what would you do?

8. What other parks or playgrounds serve your community? Can you compare them by answering the seven questions above for each one?
