Centerfold Lesson:
Before and Beyond

VISITING A NURSING HOME

Many people who live in nursing homes no longer have friends and relatives nearby and enjoy visits from young people. There are more things good citizens can do to improve how life is for older neighbors. The more you understand, the more you can do to help. And you might be surprised at how much you gain from them.

1. Find out how many people older than 65 live in your community. (Hint: Use your County as the community for this issue. Call your County's Office ofAging and Adult Services. KAT® Talk has a listing of these numbers if you can 't find them in your phone book.)

2. Many older people—not just those who live in nursing homes—need extra help with "activities of daily living" like dressing, food shopping, preparing meals and bathing. Some researchers say that 20 percent of the people over 65 need help with such activities. Using this information and what you learned in question 1 above, figure out approximately how many people in your community need this kind of help.

3. What private agencies and organizations in your community help take care of older citizens? (Hint: Does your phone book have a listing for Human Services? For Visiting Nurses?)

What do they do, and where does the money come from?

4. What government agencies and offices in your community help take care of older citizens? (Hint: Again, start with your County's Office on Aging.)

What do they do, and where does the money come from?
