Getting our 2007 Scrapbook off on a Great Note Legislative Interviews 2007 Our first entry is the notice in Main Line Life of our special Legislative Interviews and the 50 Year Member Award to Mary Lou Barry and Elizabeth Ledwith. What are the legislative interviews? The League of LMN invites our state legislators to publicly answer questions of importance to Lower Merion and the state at large. The event is free and open to the public. Members of the LWV LMN Steering Committee take notes on legislators questions and then report it back to you, our members, friends, and the public.
The Legislative Interviews were very successful in 2007 and we had a good turnout, partly due to the reminder phone calls we made. Legislator response on the questions will be available next week. Some interesting ideas were put forth by our State Senator (17th district) relating to the question of funding public transportation, the funding problem partly stemming from a Constitutional Amendment made in the 1960s. Other issues addressed: Gerrymandering-confusing district lines make it hard for voters to know where to vote, the state of Health Care and questions about Universal Coverage, and Election Reform (such as verifiable voter ballot). There was good audience participation. For the full write up get the Main Line Life Newspaper for Thursday, February 8, 2007. You can also check Main Line Life online. Legislators in attendence: Senator Connie Williams, State Representatives Daylin Leach (149th district), Mike Gerber (148th district), and Kathy Manderino (194th district). Our highlight was the 50 Year Member Award. Mary Lou Barry was there with friends. LWV LMN president Callie Snow awarded the framed 50 Year Member certificate and congratulatory letter from National LWV. Mary Lou was also surprised by an award from the state presented by the legislators.
