MISSION: The League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Mock Election Sofware Design Challenge: Under a grant from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, the League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh will be holding mock elections in high schools throughout Allegheny County in November. In connection with this project, the League is sponsoring a contest for high school students to develop software that mimics a voting machine, but can be run on computers available in schools. Details here.

February unit meetings: A discussion of the Marcellus Shale gas extraction issues based on background material available here. Click on member resources to the left for dates, times and places. The public is welcome to attend.

The League's publication describing Allegheny County government structure and functions has been updated and is available here.

Congratulations to the League's 2009 Good Government Award winners.

The League thanks the Good Government Award leadership donors and attendees at the 2009 award dinner for their support.

Under a grant from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, and in cooperation with Greater Pittsburgh Student Voices, the League will be conducting Mock Elections in schools in 2010. As a pilot project, 20 students from Propel Schools participated in a mock version of the November 2009 general election. See photos and mock election results here.

Facts for Citizens 2009: a guide to your elected officials. Find out who represents you and how to communicate with them. Another resource for communicating with elected officials are the district maps and contact information published by Duquesne Light in the Use Your Voice booklets (PDF format). Select Allegheny County or Pittsburgh City Council for local officials. There is also a guide for Beaver County.
