In 1920 the League was founded to provide education on voting and the political process for the newly enfranchised women who were voting for the first time. Those grassroot values and traditions are alive today. The League of Women Voters of the Wilkes Barre Area's basic purpose is to inform and educate citizens on voting and the political process in the Wilkes-Barre area. The League of Women Voters makes a difference in the lives of citizens because of the energy and passion of our dedicated Board and local members, who are committed to the League's mission and priorities.

The 26th Amendment

Youth Vote

In 1971, 18-20 year olds gained the right to vote with the passage of the 26th amendment to the United States Constitution. The road to this landmark amendment was not a smooth one. It was paved with young people's resentment that they could fight in a war but at the same time were not permitted to vote. The decision to allow 18-20 year olds to vote was made only a mere 35 years ago with the passing of the 26th Amentment of the Constitution of the United States of America.
