The League of Women Voters of the Harrisburg (PA) Area collaborated with nine other organizations in the Harrisburg area to present an event entitled “Our Stories, Our Voices” on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Harrisburg YWCA. The event, which was open to the public, featured women of various backgrounds (ages, races, ethnicities, religions, etc.) who shared personal experiences to explain why they vote and why they believe voting is so important. The event had 12 women with varied stories and over 100 attendees. The purpose was to encourage people not only to register to vote, but actually to go to the polls and vote. Voter registration was also available that evening, and an actual voting booth was available to demonstrate how voting is accomplished.
The National Organization for Women, Harrisburg Chapter, contacted various organizations to ask them to participate in this event. The request resulted in a committee of the 10 groups that did the planning. Each of the planning organizations through social media and other methods solicited women to share their stories. The event was video recorded by one of the sponsoring organizations, Coalition of Labor Union Women, and shared with all other organizations.
