Statement: League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania on Rep. Scott Perry Co-Sponsoring Bill to Let State Lawmakers Elect U.S. Senators
STATEWIDE – The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania (LWVPA) has released the following statement on Pennsylvania Representative Scott Perry’s co-sponsorship of a resolution to the 17th Amendment of the United States Constitution:
“The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania condemns Rep. Scott Perry's support of a resolution to repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which would strip Americans of their ability to directly elect U.S. Senators and return us to a time when power was exercised by a small group of political elites rather than the people. This is yet another attack on our most basic democratic principles, which are rooted in expanding the role citizens play in American democracy. We deeply oppose any effort to erode the ability of Americans to hold their elected representatives accountable and to concentrate power into the hands of the few.”
