Board Service Opportunities

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania is currently seeking Board of Director nominations the Director of Environmental Policy position. For over 100 years, the League has served as a nonpartisan voice for the rights of Pennsylvania voters. We’re looking for the next generation of League leaders to continue our important mission of empowering voters and defending democracy for another century. Learn more about our work here. The League believes that an informed voter is a powerful voter. League members register voters, advocate for important Pennsylvania policy issues, and promote civic engagement year round. LWVPA Board members support our grassroots network of 30 local Leagues across Pennsylvania, guide our statewide advocacy portfolio, lift up the voices of voters, and provide key operational support for our small but mighty nonprofit.

Open Board Positions:

Secretary (Click Here to Apply):

Role: Serve as the official recorder of League business. The secretary position plays an important role in fostering communication and diligence through proper management and utilization of important records such as meeting minutes and the LWVPA bylaws.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a record of League deliberations and action for present and future reference. 

  • Prepare the agenda for monthly Board meetings through a process of creating a draft, sending it to the President of the Board and Executive Director for review, editing the draft, and sending the final agenda to Board members at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting.

  • Take minutes of Board meetings, annual meetings and other decision-making meetings, including the LWVPA Convention. Attach Board Members’ reports to minutes; record motions word for word; and track official votes. Verify if quorum is present.

  • Serve on LWVPA Board Executive Committee, and additional committees as directed by the President.

  • Participate in Board discussion and vote on motions.

  • Undertake special projects as directed by the President.

  • Bring professional connections and donors into League work. Support LWVPA fundraising efforts.

Time Commitment:

  • 3+ hours per week

Board Member at Large (Click Here to Apply):

Role: Board members-at-large are officers whose duties and responsibilities are not fixed but instead vary according to the needs of the organization and as directed by other Board members. These members will assist with projects, provide wisdom and experience, and increase the capacity of the Board as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend monthly Board meetings prepared for the agenda.

  • Communicate with Board members and staff on special projects and committees as needed.

  • Consider and vote on any major Board decisions that arise.

  • Assist in overall planning and decision making.

  • Serve on LWVPA Board committees as directed by the President.

  • Communicate expertise and experience to Board members as needs arise.

  • Bring professional connections and donors into League work. Support LWVPA fundraising efforts.

Time Commitment:

  • 2+ hours per week/variable

Director of Environmental Policy (Click Here to Apply)

Role: The Environment Director supports policy, advocacy, and education work related to environmental protection in Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and run a statewide environmental policy committee with representatives of local Leagues from across the state. Delegate projects to committee members.

  • Act as expert on the LWVPA Board for environmental/natural resources topics and issues.

  • Recommend League policy action for Board approval.

  • Support the LWVPA Straight Scoop on Shale / Reimagine Project.

  • Be well informed on local, state, and national positions and be able to explain League positions to local officials and state legislators.

  • Monitor PA General Assembly actions (or inactions) on bills of interest

  • Participate in environmental policy coalitions.

  • Support LWVPA’s environmental policy communications

  • Serve on LWVPA committees as directed by the President.

  • Bring professional connections and donors into League work. Support LWVPA fundraising efforts.

  • 5+ hours per week
