LWVPA Statement on SCOTUS Legalizing Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court held June 30 that a Colorado website designer may discriminate against same-sex couples in her wedding website business based upon her right to free expression under the First Amendment

This decision rolls back decades of progress in anti-discrimination protections in this country by condoning discrimination under the pretense of free speech.

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania does not support discrimination against any group and will continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community in their fight against discrimination.

LWVPA Statement on SCOTUS Affirmative Action Decision

In a 6-3 ruling June 29, the Supreme Court struck down race-conscious admissions policies, also known as Affirmative Action, at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, limiting how institutions of higher education can consider race in admissions decisions

Affirmative Action is a policy aimed at increasing educational opportunities for underrepresented communities. This devastating ruling will lead to less racially diverse student bodies, further disenfranchise people of color, and harm our democracy.

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania does not support discrimination against any group and will continue to support underrepresented groups in their fight against discrimination.

LWVPA Statement on SCOTUS Student Loan Decision

In a 6-3 ruling June 30, the Supreme court struck down President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief program. The program would have allowed eligible borrowers to cancel up to $20,000 in debt, helping approximately 43 million Americans. 

Student loan debt has become a rapidly growing problem in the US, as college costs have nearly doubled since 1990, and student loan debt has increased more than sevenfold The debt also disproportionately affects people of color, women, and lower income people. 

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania does not support discrimination against any group.  LWVPA supports equal access to quality public education for citizens at all levels and adequate financing based on an equitable and flexible tax system.
